The story of the Gulf Breeze Six is a fascinating tale of six US military intelligence analysts from the 701st Military Intelligence Brigade at Augsburg, West Germany. On July 9, 1990, they deserted their posts, convinced that the end of the world was imminent. The group, consisting of Spc. Kenneth Beason, Spc. Vance Davis, Sgt. Annette Eccleston, Pfc. Michael Hueckstaedt, Pfc. Kris Perlock, and Pfc. William Setterberg, left their station in Germany and traveled to Gulf Breeze, Florida, a noted UFO hotspot.

Their desertion was discovered when a broken taillight on their van led to a routine traffic stop, and Hueckstaedt, the driver, was detained by police. The remaining five were later rounded up and taken to Fort Benning, Georgia, where they were kept in solitary confinement. Their fate hung in the balance until their families leaked their predicament to the press, leading to interventions from Senators Casman and Dole.

In a surprising turn of events, three weeks after their arrest, instead of facing severe punishment by a military tribunal, they were discharged from Fort Knox with full honors1. However, following Colin Powell’s dissent to this verdict, this was withdrawn, and they were reduced to the lowest rank and forfeited half a month’s pay.

The case remains shrouded in mystery. The Pentagon initially stated that the six were members of a group called “The End of the World”, but this statement was later retracted. When the case was declassified, 1400 out of 1600 pages were withheld. Some believe that the military wanted to sweep the incident under the carpet to avoid further embarrassment.

After their discharge, the Gulf Breeze Six largely disappeared from public view. One of the members, Vance Davis, has made some appearances discussing the incident. However, detailed information about their lives post-discharge is not readily available. The case remains a fascinating mystery, with many unanswered questions.
