Archive review | October 3, 2026. Six dark triangular shapes in a satellite image triggered a concern about anomalous objects and navigation safety. AARO's March 17, 2023 case-resolution report assesses the shapes seen on August 30, 2017 in Southeast Asia as almost certainly stationary fishing nets at the water's surface. This is an existing government assessment, not a new sighting or a newly announced resolution.
The comparison behind the identification
The official report says analysts compared shape, size and location with other imagery. It gives approximate dimensions of 11 by 7 meters. A publicly archived copy describes three science-and-technology partners agreeing on the fishing-net explanation. That copy also discusses later imagery, visible turbidity downstream and stock footage of nets in the same river.
The reasoning is more specific than a resemblance to a triangle: the analysts sought matching objects in the same geographical setting, including signs of their relationship to the water.
A date difference in the public versions
The archived copy describes additional comparison imagery from 2017 in its opening account; the official 508-formatted version describes 2023 imagery there. Both retain the original August 2017 incident and the net assessment. Readers should cite the version used rather than silently merge those dates. The available text does not establish why the wording changed.
What the record can support
The Black Vault copy is an archive of the agency's document, not a second independent field investigation. Its value is making the explanation and its version history inspectable. The cited materials support a confident description of what AARO concluded; they do not allow this publication to reconstruct the full satellite-imagery workflow.
NASA's independent study report supplies a broader standard: scientific explanations should be testable against data capable of distinguishing alternatives. It does not separately authenticate this case's fishing gear.
For UAP research, the methodological lesson is to separate a shape label from a physical object classification. A dark triangle in an image is not yet a triangular aircraft. Position, repeat observations and the surrounding environment can decide between explanations that look equally plausible in a crop.
Evidence position: This particular case is officially resolved as fishing nets. It says nothing by itself about unrelated triangle reports from pilots or ground observers. A stronger public audit would include the original image identifiers and the complete comparison set, allowing others to check location, scale and chronology.
